2021 / Upright Figures
The Upright Figures series is a tribute to one of the most ancient ways in which artists have embodied social, political and cultural concerns, in images ranging from fertility goddesses to authoritarian rulers. In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries the body has remained an abiding theme, as it mirrors shifting perceptions and ideas of what we are.
The figures are tall and powerful - one thinks of Stonehenge, of ancien Mastabas, broken columns and pagan altars, which geometric patterns that can be found on the walls of the first temples and in the art from ancien Indus or Central Europe - patterns that are also present at the far end of the world.
The references are lost in the mists of time, in the first drawings of man, and lost civilizations.
